A/N: Challenge by [livejournal.com profile] lysa1 and [livejournal.com profile] ldy "Snape is in a relationship with Kingsley, Lupin or McGonagall. Lucius is trying to lure Severus away from his partner because he wants him for himself. Lucius can use any means to do that but not in a psycho-way. Lucius is in love (or will be). Why/how long he has been is up to you.
We want Lucius sneaky and Slytherin-ish, outsmarting Severus somehow. Fluffy socks, three reindeer and a happy end have to be included."

“Two foie gras with orange blossom salad and small potatoes. Right.” Not bothering to make any eye contact, the waiter made a last scrabble on his little notebook and then walked away.

“Father?”

“Leave it, Draco.” Lucius gave his son a tired smile. “Some people are quite determined to show me how they feel. It was to be expected.”

“But you received your pardon five months ago! Surely they can’t-“

Lucius snorted. “Of course they can. I received a pardon, not an acquittal. Even you should be able to fi-“ Lucius stopped when several people walked passed their table on their way to the exit.
His pardon still being a delicate issue, the last thing he wanted to do was draw attention to himself.

“Well, well, well. Lucius Malfoy.” Somebody stopped next to where Lucius and his son were seated. Inwardly bracing himself for more insults to come, Lucius looked up.

“I prefer you the way I saw you last time; in a filthy damp cell in Azkaban.”

“Kingsley.” Lucius nodded curt.

“So even Scrimgeour has fallen for your tainted Galleons. Tell me, how much did you pay to get out this time?”

“I shall treat that suggestion with the contempt it deserves.” Lucius gave the former Auror a blank stare before noticing that he wasn’t alone.

“Severus.”

“Lucius.” Two cold black eyes stared down at him.

“Come, Severus. We still have some shopping to do.” Kingsley made a point of taking Severus’ right hand in his own.

“It’s really true then,” Lucius mumbled, staring at the backs of the two men as they left.
“What? Did you think I lied?” Draco huffed.

Well, no but you have to admit that if there ever was an unlikely pairing... “

Draco shrugged. “The story goes that Kingsley, while researching professor Snape’s case, fell in love with him. He was supposed to prosecute him for the murder of the Headmaster but ended up defending him. What professor Snape sees in him is beyond me, though.”

“Severus is like a dog, Draco. Throw him a bone or two and he’ll happily follow you wherever you go.” Lucius frowned. “Enough. Let’s not spoil our evening debating them.

Such cold, unforgivable eyes.

“Tell me about this girl you expressed your interest in. She is from French origin, you said?” Lucius straightened his back, all smiles again, feigning interest the best he could.

Anything to ignore this arising gnawing pain.

“Ah yes, Camille Marais.” Eager to tell his father all about the girl he had fallen in love with, Draco gave detailed descriptions of their meetings so far. Emphasizing that she was of noble blood and wealthy, he quickly headed towards more pleasant details.
The first time their eyes met, her graceful movements, the teasing and amused twinkle in her blue eyes – Lucius heard every little detail of his son’s young love. “I’m looking forward to meeting this young lady. Allow me to send her an invitation for a high tea upcoming Tuesday.”

Six days. That should give him enough time to take a thorough look at the Marais genealogy.

Thankful for the invitation, and quite an informal one at that, Draco grinned from ear to ear. He didn’t quite understand the change but ever since he’d come back from Azkaban, his father was definitely less formal and strict.

“You are, I assume, returning to your work placement now? I will see you two next week then.” Once outside again, father and son said their goodbyes. As Lucius watched his son Apparate he decided on a stroll in the busy shopping streets, hesitant to go home again. With Narcissa dead and busy Draco being on placement in the legal profession, the manor no longer felt warm and welcoming. It now was heartbreakingly empty. Oh, how people would enjoy the knowledge of Lucius Malfoy feeling lonely!

“ - tolerated this nonsense long enough. I am going home. Now.”

An all too familiar snarling voice made Lucius look up. Severus and Kingsley. His curiosity aroused, Lucius quickly hid in a nearby doorway.

“You promised!” Kingsley exclaimed.

“You sound like a spoiled brat, Kingsley.” Severus’ voice sounded faintly mocking.

“You promised to go Christmas shopping with me.”

“I agreed to accompany you until nine. It is now a quarter past. I am going home.”

A silent battle of the wills followed until Kingsley let out a long suffering sigh.

“All right, all right. Let’s have dinner Friday evening. The Christmas spirit and all, you know.”

“Sod the spirit.”

“Severus.” Kingsley sounded truly exhausted. “What do I have to do to get you to experience the Christmas spirit? Pick you up in a sled?”

Kingsley tried the humorous approach this time but Severus’ stare was enough to freeze the smile on his face.

“Saturday morning, nine o’clock. Two hours. That’s all.” Severus threw the packages he was carrying on top of the pile Kingsley held. “Oh, and Kingsley? No sled or you’ll be a dead man.” He Apparated.

Lucius snorted. Stupid Kingsley. Severus and Christmas? That was like the Dark Lord expressing his undying love to a Muggle!

Did the man even know Severus? Had he bothered to observe him? Severus’ grim expression, the mocking tone of his voice and the resigned way he’d agreed to meet on Saturday - it told Lucius that Severus was playing with Kingsley.

Which meant that Severus did not feel truly appreciated nor acknowledged. Show him the respect he deserved and Severus would treat you with respect, reluctant or reserved as it may be. He’d seen it so many times, during their school days and later with the Dark Lord; the way Severus treated you, was a perfect reflection of his opinion about you. He never lied. Severus wasn’t like that. It was just a simple matter of learning to read the subtle variations in his tone of voice and posture.

Apparently Kingsley was blind.

Following the former Auror, Lucius felt disappointment as he watched him enter an obscure bookshop on Darken Alley. No doubt Severus would receive a book for Christmas. About potions, of course.

Predictable. Safe.

Gifts were the perfect opportunity to deepen and show your understanding about the other person. Kingsley apparently couldn’t be bothered. Severus really didn’t deserve these kind of superficial impressions of warmth and – and what? It certainly wasn’t love. Not from his point of view.

The sound of voices jolted Lucius out of his reverie. A quick look around told him that people were starting to stare. Time to go home.

Once home, he went straight for the drinks cabinet where Lucius poured himself a glass of brandy before flopping down into the nearest chair. And why was he feeling so terribly confused all of the sudden? Because he had seen Severus? Very unlikely.
It had been amusing to notice Severus having the upper hand in this relationship with Kingsley. Which spelled disaster for the latter. Severus needed to be controlled. For his own sake.

What did he see in this Kingsley anyway?
Merlin, why was he constantly thinking about Severus now?

Lucius stared at the decanter, still half full with brandy, that was now standing on the floor in front of his right foot. His eyes then went to the empty glass he was holding.

“Fuck etiquette.” Carelessly dropping the glass, Lucius grabbed the decanter.

Sometimes a man just needed to get seriously drunk.

****

Getting drunk had not been the solution to Lucius’ confusion. On the contrary. As the days went by, his restlessness only increased.

To top it all, he couldn’t stop thinking about Severus. At first he found himself still angry with the way Kingsley was treating him. Shortly after that images of an unhappy Severus came to mind because surely Severus wasn’t happy in a relationship like this. He needed somebody to challenge his intelligence and Kingsley clearly was not able to fulfil that need.

So why the hell was Severus staying with that man? Love of ease? Comfort?

“And why, for Merlin’s sake, do I even care?” Lucius gave his reflection in the bathroom mirror a second glare.

Suddenly it hit him.

He was in love with Severus.

“No. That’s ridiculous.” He preferred women. He’d loved Narcissa. A woman.

So how come the minute Severus comes into your line of vision, you only have eyes for him?

“That’s not tr-“ Damn, it was! Even at school he’d always studied and analysed Severus. The boy had intrigued him from day one. Proud, intelligent, guarded, strong-willed. A quiet, mysterious boy with a fascinating knowledge of the Dark Arts.

The moment the Dark Lord had expressed his interest in Severus, Lucius lured him in. It had been the most gratifying task ever. He knew that most people were afraid of Severus’ sharp tongue and mind but Lucius found both unbelievably refreshing and stimulating. Even his fierce temperament. Lucius hardly ever encountered resistance, let alone reply. Severus gave it. Undaunted. Every other person would have suffered severe consequences for such behaviour. Severus always got away with it, leaving Lucius with this weird, overwhelming desire to touch him. He’d never understood that particular feeling.

Until today.
Now he understood why the look of those long fingers always caused this ticklish sensation in his stomach. Why he always felt like drowning every time he stared into these black eyes.

“Yes, yes, I get the point.” Wonderful. Now he was even talking to his erection.

Lucius took care of it in an almost mechanical way before dressing himself. The decision was made; Severus was who he wanted and Severus was who he was going to get. There was only the little matter of buying the man he was about to court the perfect gift.
Lucius Apparated to London.

****

“Limited edition. Describes the more er, delicat- “

“I can read, Kingsley,” Severus snapped, staring at the book in his hand. Another book about potions. Oh goodie. He opened the book with a sigh and browsed through the pages.

“Good?”

“It is acceptable. Thank you.” Severus placed it on the table next to his plate, then concentrated on his breakfast again.

Kingsley sighed.

“You don’t like it.”

“I thanked you. What else do you want? Tears of joy?”

“Merlin, Severus.” Now it was Kingsley’s turn to snap. “You don’t even try, do you? At least have the goodness t-”

“I loathe Christmas, as you bloody well know,” Severus interrupted, “yet I accompanied you to London so you could get your sodding gifts. Expecting me to ‘get the spirit’ is really too much to ask for and rather foolish, Kingsley. As is the presumption that I’d buy a gift for you.”

“Do not use Occlumency on me, dammit!”

Severus smirked. “Never knew that blushing would be visible with your colour of skin.”

“Shut up.” Kingsley bit, staring at his tea as if it just had burped.

“With pleasure.” Severus finished breakfast, grabbed his plate and walked in the direction of the kitchen when he noticed a second package.

“Another present, Kingsley? My, my, you really are spoiling me, aren’t you?” Despite the irony in his voice Severus was curious enough to put his plate on the table and pick the present up from the floor.

“Another present? What are you… ?” Kingsley frowned, watching Severus unwrapping the gift.

Socks. Black fluffy socks.
‘Magical socks. Guaranteed to warm your feet within five seconds!’

“Easy to activate with just one simple word… safe to wear… prevents perspiring feet… mmm… “ Severus nodded while reading the information before looking up and giving Kingsley a shy smile. “Well now, that is a thoughtful gift. Personal and…”

A little piece of parchment fell out between the socks. Severus caught it.

“You deserve only the best. I devote myself to give you exactly that.”

Visible at the bottom was a slightly distorted picture. That was all. No sender. Lost in thought Severus brushed with his thumb over the picture. Immediately he felt the unmistakeable tugging of a Portkey.
Next thing he knew, Severus found himself sitting on cold, hard word in a clearing in the woods. His first reaction was to grab his wand, his second reaction was a good look at his surroundings.

He was sitting in a sled.

“What the-“

“Such a lovely picture.” A chuckle.

“Lucius?!” Severus jumped to his feet, aiming his wand.

“Now, now, calm down, Severus. That is not the way to start our courtship.” Lucius kept leaning against the sled, clearly not impressed by the wand that almost touched his nose.

“Our courtship? Have you gone mad?!” Severus stared at him in utter disbelief. “What-“

“Did you like the socks? What did you think of them?”

“The… What?”

“The socks, Severus. What did you think of them?”

“Well, thoughtful, persona- What the hell has that got to do with this?!”

“Has anybody ever bothered to give you something this thoughtful and personal?” Lucius cocked his head, smiling his most charming smile while pushing the wand down.

“No, but – Stop changing the subject!”

“Oh, but I am not changing the subject, I assure you.” Calmly gesturing him to sit down, Lucius cheered inwardly as Severus obeyed without the slightest hesitation.

“Is he giving you want you want, Severus? What you need? Can he make you whimper, whine, moan, beg, shiver, scream, howl and cry? Break you down to nothing more than a boneless gibbering mess?”

Severus stared, dumbfounded. Lost for words.

“Is he giving you the intellectual stimulation you need and, let’s be honest, crave? Does he really see you? Can you truly be the person that you are? Unconditionally? ” Lucius slowly stepped closer, lowering his voice to a mere whisper. “Is he able to seduce you into a frenzy of rage? To the point that all you can think of is the urge to lash out? To hurt and feel how it empowers you, feeds you?”

Severus listened, entranced, face glowing.

“I can give you all of that and much, much more.” Lucius decided to take the risk, stood on tiptoe and placed a soft kiss on the half open mouth in front of him.

Severus reacted as he was shocked out of a trance and forcefully pushed Lucius away.

“First you kidnap me and then you dare to kiss me? I’m going to kill you!” Severus hissed, face twisted in anger as he pointed his wand at Lucius again.

“Please do.” Lucius calmly took a step back, unmoved by the outburst of anger. “Are you vibrating with energy, Severus?”

Severus opened his mouth, ready to scream, when suddenly it all clicked into place. Shock, disgust, confusion, understanding - Lucius watched it happen and as far as he was concerned, it was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

“I hate you,” Severus hissed, somehow not able to put much conviction in his voice.

“Enough to dump Kingsley?”

“Oh gods, yes.”

**Sound of violins playing as a sled, pulled by three reindeer, lifts up into the air and slowly fades out of sight. As the sled passes the full moon, the two men in it can be seen kissing passionately**

Poor clueless Kingsley, but yay! for Lucius giving Severus socks to woo him. Loved it!

Can't help feeling sorry for Kingsley, as I am partial to a nice bit of KS/SS, but Lucius is so obviously the better candidate here! I bet all of his friends will turn around and say 'told you so' when they find out that Snape has run off with someone just as nasty as he is; that a good and honest auror never should have mixed himself up with a slippery, murdering (utterly ravishable) ex Death Eater. I don't suppose I can persuade you to write a bit of a sequel along those lines? *flutters lashes*

Nice soppy Christmas-themed ending too!
